Hassanin Ahmed, one of the most prominent heroes of the October 1973 War, which pitted Egypt and Syria against Israel, has passed away. He is the subject of the most famous photograph immortalizing the moments of victory in that war.
Hassanin Ahmed, a native of Sharqia Governorate, participated in the military operations. A photograph of him, imbued with fervor, captured him crossing the Bar Lev Line with the Egyptian army. This line had been constructed by Israel after its occupation of the Sinai Peninsula in the 1967 war. In the photograph, he is gazing at the Egyptian aircraft as they take off to strike Israeli army positions in Sinai.
The image has become a symbol of the Egyptian army’s morale and is widely used to this day on the anniversary of the October War.
The funeral of the Egyptian hero is scheduled to take place on Sunday in the city of 10th of Ramadan, with a large turnout expected from residents and public figures.
In their eulogies, the city’s residents noted that Hassanin was a national icon who lived through a pivotal period in modern Egyptian history, and his image will forever stand as a testament to the heroism of the Egyptian army.
