The main route to the summit of Mount Everest has reopened after a two-week closure caused by a 30-meter ice column, thanks to a group of climbers who successfully removed the obstruction.
With the peak of the climbing season, which typically runs from April to May, approaching, the delay raised concerns about severe overcrowding on the treacherous route, especially given that some 425 climbers have already been granted permits to attempt the summit of the world’s highest mountain this year.
Authorities and climbers alike fear a repeat of the long queues seen on the mountain in 2019.
