How will artificial intelligence change the rules of the game in supermarkets?

With increasing competition and accelerating transformations in the retail sector, grocery stores and supermarket chains worldwide are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to help them protect profit margins and retain customers. This comes as traditional methods of boosting sales have become less effective, given shoppers’ tendency to shop at multiple stores in search of the best deals.

This reality has contributed to the increased market share of discount stores, prompting traditional grocery stores and supermarkets to abandon the principle of sweeping promotional offers and instead adopt AI tools to help them manage inventory and price goods, especially perishable items.

    Smart Discount Engineering
AI tools and software help supermarket chains and other grocery stores increase sales and boost profits without resorting to widespread discounts. This is achieved by monitoring inventory and determining optimal product prices at the right time, rather than waiting until products reach the end of their shelf life to be liquidated at rock-bottom prices that erode profit margins. This process is done with the help of data from retail systems, which constitutes an asset that gives artificial intelligence algorithms the ability to understand consumer behavior and the purchasing patterns they follow, in addition to the price level that encourages them to buy. Thus, based on this information, the algorithms become able to engineer systematic discounts, especially when they notice that there is an inventory of goods that is at risk of being wasted.
